The White House and Congressional leaders are working to put together healthcare reform compromise legislation that would involve the House passing the Senate version of healthcare reform and then both chambers passing changes to that bill through a procedure called reconciliation.

Political Leaders Fail To Address Ag During Summit

Today, President Barack Obama hosted a health care summit at the White House, having invited House and Senate Democrats and Republicans to debate the issues tied to the health care reform discussion. Many issues were raised, but those issues germane to agriculture were not addressed. Earlier this week, Obama issued the Administration’s health care proposal, which incorporates much of the Senate passed bill with changes needed to secure support of House Democrats. The eleven page White House proposal leaves the unique needs of agriculture unaddressed.

Latest Health Care Proposal Does Not Fit Ag Needs

Yesterday, the White House released a healthcare reform proposal in advance of the bipartisan healthcare summit on Thursday. Not surprisingly, the proposal suggests adjustments to the Senate and House bills. On many issues, the proposal incorporates much of the Senate passed bill with changes needed to secure support of House Democrats. Of particular note to Western Growers members, the employer responsibility provisions are strengthened.
